PRACTICAL TIPS FOR TELEHEALTH CONSULTATIONS – DR MONICA MOORE

Here is what I have done since starting telecounselling sessions:

TECHNOLOGY:

I use the paid version of Zoom as it is very stable, easy to use, and it offers encryption, a waiting room (I click on the patient’s name when they log on) and passwords that are encrypted in the link that the patient ‘clicks’ on.

I make sure my battery is charged, and my phone is available so I can call if needed.

I sort out issues by using Google and youtube. Lots of help there!

PROFESSIONAL ASPECTS:

I wear work clothes. (this is only necessary for the top part of the body)

Camera – I place the camera so I am looking up, and the patient sees my head until my mid-chest.

Background – I have created a peaceful and neutral background behind me rather than use a virtual background. (aim is ‘not distracting for the patient’)

Lighting – aim for soft lighting of your face – sometimes a bedside lamp with a cloth over it works well. It’s about being seen clearly.

COMFORT:

I am allowing gaps between appointments where I get up and walk, stretch, garden, make a cup of tea, start dinner, do a bit of sewing…you decide what would work best to keep your energy levels up.

I use the earbud headphones that came with my mobile phone.

I have adjusted desk/seat for comfort.

PREPARATION:

I send all patients an email before their appointment with an attached telehealth consent form, tips for doing telehealth comfortably, and the link if using Zoom.

ETHICS:

I do not record sessions, and ask that patients do the same.

I ask about privacy every session. (I have some patients who connect from their cars or unused offices at work) I also make sure my door is closed.

I create a crisis plan with the patient.
