GP COUNSELLING TRAINING
Dr Monica Moore is a GP with a full-time psychotherapy practice, and a passion for sharing the insights of psychology with clinicians working in primary health care.
Dr Moore graduated in Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 1983. In 1996, she attended a programme run by Sutherland Hospital, training GPs in the use of CBT and Motivational Interviewing in the treatment of anxiety in General Practice. Positive feedback by patients to other doctors in the practice and the patients’ friends and family meant she received more and more referrals. The counselling practice grew, and in 2005 she finally made the transition into full-time psychotherapy.
Using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to help patients manage their emotional distress and improve their physical health enhanced her clinical practice. Motivational Interviewing was a revelation, as it helped with time management and created an environment where patients collaborated to develop sustainable treatment plans.
Over the years, realising that some people required different strategies, she undertook training in Interpersonal Therapy, Hypnosis, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and EMDR.
Dr Moore has been involved in a training capacity with the RACGP, ASPM, PDP, CESPHN, Australian Society of Hypnosis; Black Dog Institute; General Practice Conference, Exhibition and Medical Education; GP Synergy; WAGPET, NSW Institute of Psychiatry; Rural Doctors Association; Sphere, and the Sutherland Division of General Practice.
