MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING WORKSHOP OUTLINE
Motivational Interviewing was developed by Miller and Rollnick in the treatment of patients with addictive disorders. This population-based intervention is a proven approach to helping people overcome ambivalence that gets in the way of change.
The half-day workshop on Motivational Interviewing aims to provide GPs with a conversational technique that helps patients to see their problems in a new light. It is presented from the GP perspective, with a focus on common issues and time-saving tips.
A brief power-point presentation will outline the framework. The workshop will include discussion of participants’ cases and small group exercises designed to increase skill acquisition and development of confidence in the use of Motivational Interviewing in a busy general practice. Materials and handouts will be provided.
Versions of these workshops were presented in March 2008 in the New England Division of GP, the 2009 Summer Refresher Conference for the Rural Doctors Network, and August 2009 in Tamworth.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS
Participants will:
- Learn how to assess personality styles and stages of change, and to choose and apply appropriate strategies of motivational interviewing.
- Learn how to frame and communicate MI interventions in the context of the medical consultation.
- Learn how assessing the patient’s stage of change can save time and increase the effectiveness of interventions.
- Learn how assessing the personality styles in the interaction can clarify issues and guide interventions that work.
